About

There are currently about 410 students at the school, ranging in age from 5 years old (Foundation) to 12 years old (Year 6), with an average class size of 23 students. Class structures enable children to develop at a rate that suits their capabilities and to learn from their peers.

Our school employs specialist staff in Science, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, German, Physical Education, Library, Early Intervention.

We focus on the development of the whole child: academically, physically, socially and emotionally.

Our school prides itself on its strong community links. We welcome the involvement of families in a range of school programs and activities. The school also has strong partnerships with businesses and organisations within the local community.

School Leaders

Cheltenham Primary School prides themselves on the way they give their students a voice. Providing students with an opportunity to vocalise what they think the school needs, helps to develop a sense of belonging and connection.

Throughout their schooling, students at CPS have the opportunity to be a leader in many different capacities. These begin in Year 3 where students can apply to be their classes Student Representative Council (SRC) and finish in Year 6 where they have the opportunity to become school leaders such as School Captains, Sports Captains and Art Captains.

Hello! from our 2022, School Captains, Samaya and Tyson

Samaya K
Dear teachers, parents and students,

What another great year of learning and having fun! My name is Samaya K and I am proud to be one of our school captains for 2022. I began at CPS at the end of Year 1 and was super excited for Year 2. I am 11 years old and open to any ideas. One big focus I have for this school is to make it a better place by helping the environment. This goal can be achieved by using your help and the other student leaders.

As a leader I want to make everyone feel welcome and happy to start school. Being a leader doesn’t mean having a badge, it means to show respect, help others, and demonstrate kindness. As we’re getting closer to 2022, I cannot wait to learn a lot about all of you and every detail you want to share.

Thank you for taking your time to read this.

Samaya K

Tyson B
Dear teachers, parents and students,

My name is Tyson B and I have been at CPS since Prep. I have always wanted to be one of the two School Captains standing out the front at assembly. I am really excited to be one of your School Captains for 2022. I am looking forward to making Cheltenham Primary School an even better place for students to learn and have fun.

One of my ideas is to have a Smile Week in both Semester 1 and 2. Smile Week is a great way to teach students about being kind. If any students have ideas for the school or ways to make assemblies better they can come find me at recess and lunch. I am so excited for 2022!

I can assure you that I will be a great School Captain.

History

Cheltenham Primary School proudly celebrated its 160th year in 2015.

We are the fifth oldest school in Victoria.

Cheltenham Primary School was established as a private school by Frederick and Fanny Meeres in 1855. The school was first named the Beaumaris Wesleyan School. In 1863 the school became a public school under the control of the National Schools Board, and was renamed Beaumaris Common School No. 84. In 1869 the school was relocated onto Crown Land in Charman Road, Cheltenham – its current site.

Three years later in 1872, the school was again renamed, this time as State School No. 84 Beaumaris. It was to continue under this name until 1885, when it finally took on its current official name – State School No. 84 Cheltenham.

The land originally allocated to the school was effectively doubled in 1910 following a submission by parents that land set aside temporarily for the school, be permanently allocated. This land comprises the current oval and sanctuary. The original building consisted of two rooms: one was 18′ by 12′ by 10′ high (approx. 6m x 4m x 3m high), and the other was 18′ by 24′ by 10′ high (approx 6m x 8m x 3m high). The smaller room housed 49 pupils and one teacher, while the larger housed 54 children and a teacher. At the same time, approximately four acres of land at the back of the school, part of a Government reserve, was fenced in and made available for use as a playground area.

In 1911, a major redesign of the school was commissioned. This effectively trebled the size of the school. Of the six total classrooms, three are still used for that purpose today, two have been transformed into the main office and administration office, and one is the current staffroom. It is also worth noting that our main entrance and foyer, with its beautiful curved archway, was originally built during the 1911 redevelopment – not as an entrance, but as a “lavatory”!

We are proud that some of the staff and students of Cheltenham Primary School have become famous both locally and internationally. A former student Sir Robert Jackson, following a distinguished army career, was appointed the first Secretary General of the United Nations following the conclusion of World War II.

The creation of our sanctuary in 1971 from an area used by students as a play area for over 100 years (and once the school rubbish dump) is one of the most significant projects undertaken by the school community. The Gazebo was constructed during 1999 by Cheltenham Primary School Parents and is named the Sir Robert Jackson Gazebo. In 2004-2005, the school community created a new front fence, entrance and garden areas to celebrate our 150th year.

2011 saw the completion of a capital works project, the Federal Government’s ‘Building the Education Revolution’ program (BER). This project realised the completion of a new building with six classrooms as well as additional flexible learning spaces used today as our Senior School.
