Transition Information Session

To ease this process, the Foundation teachers will walk you through our approach to transition, what to expect on the day and what to bring. They will also give you some school readiness suggestions that can be practised at home.

Working Alongside Early Childhood Services
Our Foundation teachers work together with every child’s Early Childhood Service to create a smooth transition to school.

The Foundation teachers visit the main feeder Kindergartens to meet the future Foundation students and to discuss each child’s strengths and how to support their learning needs. If they are not able to visit your child’s service, they will give that centre a call.

Teachers also find out important information for your child’s entry to school through their Transition Learning and Development Statement which is completed by the Kindergarten Teachers.

Meet and Greets

Before your child starts school, they will be invited in for an individual Meet and Greet. This gives your child the chance to get a little taste of school by exploring the Foundation classrooms and give yourself the opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have.

Transition Events in 2024:

Literacy Assessments
Cheltenham Primary School completes individual Literacy Assessments/English Online Interviews with every student. The teachers do not expect the children to answer every question, but it helps them to understand what your child already knows and what they need next in their learning.

Half Days
After all of the Literacy Assessments are completed, the students come into school for two half days before starting full time. Each class will be split in half, with some of the students coming in for a morning session and the other half in the afternoon. This allows the teacher to spend quality time with your child and begin to build a strong connection with them.

Buddies
Another way the Foundation students learn about the routines of school and feel more confident playing in the yard, is by having a Year 6 Buddy. The Year 6 students act as a mentor and friend for the Foundation students by helping them if they need support and engaging in play experiences with them outside. This is definitely a highlight of the year for both younger and older students.

Optional Wednesdays
At Cheltenham Primary School, the first few Wednesdays up until Labour Day are optional. Instead of completing the School Entry Assessments on Wednesdays, these are completed at the beginning of the year to ensure it is a fair entry level assessment for all.

Some Foundation students come into school on the first Wednesdays as their parents are working, whilst others rest and recharge their bodies and mind for learning on Thursday and Friday. No new concepts are introduced on Optional Wednesdays, the students who are present engage in repetition of familiar activities so that others do not miss out.
